Hyundai decided to create a unique hybrid system for the 2011 Sonata. A parallel electric motor and fuel engine configuration allows the car to run on gasoline internal combustion, an electric motor, or both! The clutch separates the gasoline engine from the Blue Drive electric motor, and is attached to a fluid six-speed transmission. Tennessee Hyundai Sonata Hybrid drivers will find the Sonata Hybrid can operate up to 62 mph on batteries alone. Hyundai engineers paied an electric motor with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine to help generate the 206 hp with a best-in-class 40 mpg highway rating. The Sonata Hybrid is tight-fisted with fuel, yet generous with performance. Sonata Hybrid's 2.4L DOHC Theta II engine features and Atkinson Cycle for decreased pumping and friction loss ? resulting in improved fuel economy.

To help Sonata Hybrid yield big gains in fuel efficiency, power and torque, meticulous enhancements have been made to the engine's compression and power strokes. A Hybrid Starter Generator shuts off the engine when the car is stopped, cutting emissions to zero. On acceleration, the Hybrid Starter Generator automatically restarts the engine. A regenerative braking system also recharges Sonata Hybrid's batteries. ABS brakes won't just help Knoxville Hyundai Sonata Hybrid drivers stop anymore, they'll help them save fuel as well.

For even more assistance while driving, the engine-speed-sensitive, motor-driven power steering helps you more at lower speeds (for parking) and makes the handling less touchy at higher speeds (on the highway). Standard features on the Sonata Hybrid include 16" alloy wheels, low-rolling-resistance, cloth seats, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, a hybrid trip computer, a power driver's seat, a USB port for iPod connectivity and a six-speaker stereo.

The Premium Package adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a navigation system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a nine-speaker Infinity stereo, a backup camera and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a garage-door opener.

The Hyundai Sonata is one of only two cars on the market that have received both a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall safety rating from the federal government under its new crash-test procedures.
